Other Services:

Child Surveillance

This encompasses a programme of regular developmental and screening checks at key stages from birth to 18 months of age and a service to provide advice to parents on all aspects of childcare up to school age. The community-based Health Visitor service is the key component of this service, although one important check is usually carried out by your GPs.

Child Immunisations

The surgery offers a full childhood immunisation service. Shortly after your baby is born you will be given the choice to register for this service. You can also sign up to have your child immunised at Health Authority clinics. However, having the immunisations carried out at the Surgery helps us to get to know you and your baby better, and makes us more aware of any problems you may have.

Post- Natal Examination

A post-natal examination at 6 weeks is still recommended and at present this is carried out by one of the GPs at the surgery.  You need to book an appointment for your post-natal examination as soon as is practical 6 weeks after your baby is born.

Minor Surgery

The practice runs a number of minor surgery sessions and there is normally at least one session each week.

Travel Vaccinations

You should arrange an appointment for the travel clinic at reception for at least three months before your departure date. When you do this you will be given a questionnaire to complete which will provide the nurse with the information necessary to give the appropriate advice and treatment. You may wish to complete this form as you arrange the appointment but otherwise the form should be returned to reception as soon as possible. Appointments made less than one month prior to departure may mean we are unable to provide the service due to limited time and in these circumstances you will be redirected to a private travel advice clinic elsewhere, where charges may be significantly higher.  Please note that not all vaccinations are free of charge.

Women’s Health

Cervical Smears

When you receive notification that you are due for a smear test, you should contact reception and book a cervical smear appointment with the practice nurse.

You will be informed of the result by a letter sent to you by the Cervical Screening Service (not from the surgery). Results are currently available about 2 weeks after the sample is taken. The Surgery will also receive notification of the result at about the same time.

Family Planning

Some family planning services are available at the surgery as follows:

• Oral contraception (The Pill)
• The contraceptive injection – Depo-Provera – given by intra-muscular injection every 12 weeks (the first injection must be given during the first 5 days of a menstrual period)
• Emergency contraception (The Morning After Pill) – now usually consisting of a single dose of two tablets which must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex
• Unplanned pregnancy advice and referral
• Coil Removal
• Coil Insertion

Mammograms

You may be between 47-53 years old when you receive your first appointment. This is simply due to the way the programme is administered, but often causes women to be concerned that they have been “missed”.

If you believe you are overdue an appointment, or have other queries about the service, you can ring The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital (who administer the screening programme) on 0161 291 4444.

If you are within the screening age range but have not received an appointment, you can contact the service by telephoning the above telephone number.

Following screening, women should receive the result by post in about 3 weeks.
